Management information systems (MIS) are
typically computer-based systems. WordNet
defines an information system as "a system
consisting of the network of all communication
channels used within an organization." An MIS
system may also be described as a system that
collects, processes, and provides data to users
for decision making, planning, program
implementation, and control.
The components of an information system are
those that collect, manipulate, and disseminate
data. An MIS system requires hardware, software,
communications systems such as telephone lines,
people, and the data itself. Using an MIS system
includes the activities of inputting data,
processing data, storing data, and producing
outputs of data, such as in management reports.
As a field of study, the MIS system falls into
the category of information technology
management, a commercial or business
administration discipline. While it frequently
involves software engineering, it is different
in that it focuses on the integration of
computer systems with regard to the goals of the
company or business. As a field of study,
information technology management should not be
confused with computer science or engineering,
which are more theoretical and mathematical in
nature.
In business, information systems support
business operations and activities, decision
making, planning, and the formation of
competitive strategies.
